Accessibility
Last updated: October 9, 2026
The Cookout should work for everyone who wants to build, including people who are blind or have low vision, people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, and people who use a keyboard, a switch, or a screen reader. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
On this website
- Every image that carries meaning has a text description. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Headings, lists, and landmarks are marked up so screen readers can jump around the page.
- Everything works with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline, and a "Skip to content" link comes first.
- Text and buttons meet WCAG AA color contrast on the dark background.
- The page has no audio or video, so nothing needs captions here.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the floating embers and other animations turn off.
- Text scales with your browser's zoom and font-size settings.
- Links that open a new tab say so to screen readers.
- The newsletter popup can be closed with the Escape key, the close button, or a click outside it, and screen readers announce form errors.
At the live sessions
- The Cookout runs on Google Meet, which has built-in live captions you can turn on during the call.
- The chat is open the whole session, so you can take part by typing instead of speaking.
- Cameras are optional during the sprint.
- Need an accommodation, like an interpreter or extra time to share your work? Email us before the session and we'll work with you on it.
Known limits
The event banner is an illustration with text in it. Its text description repeats what the sign says. RSVPs happen on Luma, and the community lives on Skool and Discord. Those services manage their own accessibility.
